Ferra Family series:

Some secrets are buried deep. Others refuse to stay hidden.

Joey Ferra thought a European getaway would help him escape his grief. Learning to scuba dive was just another distraction—until a deadly underwater accident changes everything. Rescued by the stunning and fiercely independent Kristiana Duvall, Joey finds himself drawn into a high-stakes world of treasure hunting and peril. When he steps in to replace a missing diver on her team, he never expects to become a target of ruthless modern-day pirates. But the real danger? Falling for a woman who refuses to let anyone past her armor.

Kristiana has spent her life uncovering secrets buried beneath the ocean’s depths—while keeping her own locked away. Rescuing an unconscious diver wasn’t supposed to change her world, but Joey Ferra makes it impossible to keep her walls up. He’s relentless, stirring feelings she never dared to acknowledge. But when her past resurfaces and threatens to destroy everything, she’ll have to decide: push Joey away or risk everything for a love as unpredictable as the sea.

Danger lurks beneath the surface. Will they learn to face the unknowns together? Or chalk it up to a vacation fling?

From scuba diving to treasure hunting overseas, The Unexpected Escape drew me straight into Joey and Kristiana’s story. Not only did Joey experience some family issues with his sister while he was overseas, but he also encountered a few additional snags while traveling with Kristiana’s diving team.
Kristiana has family dynamics and issues from her past that she had to face, and both Joey and Kristiana have to navigate their growing relationship and figure out what the next steps are for their future. I enjoyed the chemistry between them as well seeing familiar characters from one of Gill’s previous series in The Unexpected Escape.

This was, perhaps, my favorite book by this author. The plot sucked me in, and I lost sleep reading late into the night. The setting was intriguing and the character development rather than the plot was central to the story, which I appreciate. I’m eagerly looking forward to future books in this series!
