Most everyone wants to leave their mark on history, and we all do in one way or another. But the Romans-wow- talk about changing history. They did it. They were history in a lot of ways. Ruins of what they built remain today as scars on the landscape all across Europe.
So we see Hadrian’s Wall is the Roman’s mark from AD122. What took the Roman’s 6 years to build has lasted over 2000 years. The wall stretches 80 miles across England. Where we went was surrounded by fields. Makes you think that maybe putting some time into a project might be worth it, especially if it lasts 2000 yrs.
Before we got to Hadrian’s Wall all I saw was sheep grazing. On our way to see it, we had to avoid sheep pies and sheep.
It really is in amazing condition for being 2000 years old. A must-see if you are in northern England.
As my husband and I stood at the wall taking pictures and looking out, an RAF jet roared above our heads. We heard it coming. I felt like I could reach up and touch it. I had my ears covered and it still about burst my eardrums. It was so loud I could feel the vibrations in my body. Anyway, the pilot buzzed us like Maverick buzzed the tower in Top Gun. If you look again at the top picture, you’ll be looking toward a bomb drop site for RAF where they do their target practice. So we watched him fly past us and then he gave us a wing rock as an apology for blowing out our eardrums. At least I’m assuming that was what the apology was for. And yes, according to my pilot husband, a wing rock from a jet is an apology.
It was pretty awesome. The pilot flew in and out of the clouds and pretty soon we lost sight of him, but I’d never been that close to an RAF jet before. My grandpa was a pilot in Vietnam– guess he passed along his love for really fast airplanes.
Have you seen the wall? What did you think?
