In 1984, popular artists of the day were enlisted to perform Do They Know It’s Christmas? which was sold and profits given to help a world cause. The first cause was the famine in Ethiopia which was reported to have “sold 3.7 million copies and raised £8m for famine relief in Ethiopia.” Today’s cause is ebola. Africa has shared the world stage with the Middle East over the past six months. Band Aid 30 has recently enlisted the help of Chris Martin from Coldplay, One Direction, Ed Sheeran, Jessie Ware, Olly Murs, Ellie Goulding, Paloma Faith, Emeli Sande, Sinead O’Connor, Underworld, Foals and Bastille, to name a few, to make their record a success.
The producers of the song hope that people won’t just watch the YouTube video or stream the song for free. Their goal is to sell it to bring a life-changing amount of aid to the peoples of Africa affected by Ebola.
Here’s the original. Word is they will be tweaking the lyrics.
The new song will be recorded this Saturday, Nov 15 and be available for purchase on Monday, Nov 17. Follow the cause with #BandAid30.
