Can we all just pause for a moment and realize that Katrina was in 2005… almost 10 years ago!!! Yet there are still obvious reminders of the devastation that rocked New Orleans’s world. Trees are bent. Roofs are patched. Water lines are still visible on some buildings. And worst of all entire houses are gone. All that is left is a concrete foundation. Along the waterfront in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, a good majority of the properties are up for sale. Hurricanes aren’t considered “ifs” but “whens” around there. The houses that are still around have been constructed with concrete stilts some over 25 feet in the air. It’s insanity.
However, the French Quarter looks just fine. The roads aren’t all that great, but the decor and spirit of the area is still the same. The greenery and architecture are beautiful.
When I looked up things to do, Jackson Square was top on the list. So of course that was where we went first. The lovely St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square is a perfect landmark to get your bearings. Right across from the Mississippi River, this beautiful church stands over the other buildings.
We had to have some gumbo and bread pudding for a snack. Unfortunately Acme decided to have a private event the one night we wanted to go. So we ate at the very famous Red Fish Grill and didn’t get to try their chocolate bread pudding but I hope I get to in the near future. I can’t forget to mention that we walked down Canal Street past the Harrah’s Casino to the Riverwalk where we went shopping at the outlets and tasted their fudge. Way too much food available in this city, so when you go, be hungry so you will get to enjoy all they have to offer.
For dessert we stopped at Cafe du Monde, but more of that on another post.
So what did I miss in New Orleans? Where should I go when I go back?
