In honor of the US’s independence from Britain, I’m writing on a British food. Look at what we’re missing out on!
In my household, the words “sausage rolls” are usually said with a groan. “Mmm saaausage roooollls.”
(How was my British accent there? Still needs work? Sigh. I do try so very hard.)
Sausage rolls consist of pork meat sausage, eggs, your favorite seasoning, and a pastry. You can find recipes all over the internet for it. I have not attempted to make these at home so I can’t vouch for any recipes personally, but I will get adventurous soon and make some just for the fun of it. , I can vouch, however, for the taste of the British sausage rolls (also very similar is Australian sausage rolls) that you’ll find at a British bakery, or most famously, Greggs.
The pastry is indeed flaky and they are best when fresh and warm. My favorite is when I get sausage in every bite. Mouthfuls of strictly pastry is disappointing when you are waiting for the tangy taste of sausage in there. But some people are big fans of just pastry which is why they buy things like buttered croissants. Crazy people. At least put some bacon in there, ya know?
Greggs isn’t only in the UK. As you can see from the ad below, Greggs also sends their fine quality products to Iceland in a Freeze-and-Bake format.
P.S. I do highly doubt they have any vegetarian or gluten-free options, but you can always ask!
