As the kickoff of the World Cup begins tonight, all eyes turn to Brazil. So I thought this #foodiefriday could be in honor of our friends in Brazil.

Guarana is the national, carbonated beverage of Brazil. And amazingly enough Guarana Antarctica is Coca-Cola’s biggest competitor. Three cheers for the underdog!! Just in case you think guarana is a nice name for a soft drink, think again. Guarana is made from the guarana plant which produces berries that look an awful lot like the berries on the can. When ripened the berries open up to reveal guarana seeds inside. Those seeds are then ground and brewed into a whole host of drink options.

The seed itself has a caffeine edge to it, so even if we aren’t seeing guaranine in Guarana form, America energy drink makers have sneaked it into our energy drinks like Monster, Rockstar, etc.

Steroids? We need to be testing the Brazilian team for traces of guaranine. Could this be the Brazilian team’s secret weapon?!?
